The most interesting part of being involved in a music start-up, is that everybody you speak with seems to have a strong opinion as to which is the best music service. Some of you, get pretty passionate about it.
Senzari’s senior team has been building music services for a long time. We have not only developed services that reached millions of users across many different territories, but we did it under a legal framework (and we have the scars to prove it).
For us, building yet another music service came down to the following considerations:
- Product Challenge / We want to build something really unique. We are not satisfied with just providing users with access to a massive music library so they have yet another playlist creation service. We want to build something that pushes the notion of a music service, something that really understands our users and adapts to them.
- Economics / We want to ensure that the model is economically sound. We want to build it on a solid licensing foundation, where the rules of the game can’t be unilaterally modified. This is hard to do given the challenges around music licensing, but we believe that there are models out there that provide good visibility and make financial sense for a start up such as ourselves.
- Mass User Adoption / We want to build a service that can become massive. We are not talking about a couple of hundred thousand users, we want millions. So we need to build a service that not only works for early adopters, such as ourselves, but that can scale to also satisfy millions of other users that may be looking for a simpler, lean-back experience.
So after a lot of analysis and soul searching, we have decided to build a personalized radio service, a new Pandora for lack of a better comparison. But yet, nothing like Pandora. We want to make a product that is funner, smarter and less predictable. We want to build it within an economic framework that is capital efficient and provides for an stable licensing environment. And lastly, we want to take it to places where no one has gone before.
